George Gund Foundation Continues Investment in Genetics Research
January 6, 2012 – Building on its longstanding support of research for retinal degenerative diseases, the Cleveland-based George Gund Foundation has awarded the Foundation Fighting Blindness a $2 million grant. The funding will focus primarily on studying the genetics of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a vision-robbing, inherited disease that affects an estimated 100,000 Americans. The grant will help support 27 projects at research institutions across the United States and Europe.
“The George Gund Foundation’s generous investment will enable us to continue exploring this important area of research and back topnotch retinal scientists who are working to identify new RP-causing genes and advance gene identification technologies,” said William T. Schmidt, chief executive officer, Foundation Fighting Blindness. “Our work in breaking down the genetic link is critical to advancing treatments and cures for RP and related retinal diseases.”
The George Gund Foundation was established in 1952 by the late George Gund, former chairman of the Cleveland Trust Company and father of Gordon Gund, co-founder of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The organization, which has awarded more than $580 million in grants to date, funds programs that enhance the understanding of physical and social environments and contribute to human well-being.
